Amateur Radio

I have a general class amateur radio license. I was initially licensed as a Technician class in September 9 (?), 2000. I passed the general exam, and the morse code element on Febuary 11 (?), 2001.

While at the UIUC, I held the office of president of the Synton Amateur Radio Club - W9YH for 4 years. We did quite a few projects during my tenure. Popular events were contesting in the IL QSO party and CQ WW SSB contests. For kicks we cleaned up and powered up the Heathkit Linear and fired it up down at Area 51 Delta... It works...

I've met many interesting people through this hobby. It's interesting how wide a range of interests this hobby attracts.

Field day, best thought of as an emergency communications drill, is really cool. In June 2002, WC8VOA had quite an impressive setup, with an 80ft crank up tower, 20 KW generator, 3 stations, many antennas, networked computer stations (including fiber!). Quite a few pictures are on WC8VOAs website.

Below is a list of clubs that I'm associated with, or have been associated with in the past.

  • W9YH - Synton Amateur Radio Club

  • WC8VOA - West Chester Amateur Radio Association

  • W8GYH - St. Xavier High School Amateur Radio Club

  • GCARA - Greater Cincinnati Amateur Radio Association
